  ARGENTINA AND ITS CRISES INTRODUCTION All Argentines living abroad, in my case in Peru for the past 50 years, have been asked countless times, "How can it be that Argentina, once so prosperous, is in this state?" I understand that more knowledgeable and wiser individuals than myself have attempted to provide very scholarly explanations on this matter. I will try to give my perspective on the issue. THE CHRONIC DIVISION DEFICIT The problem arises when it is noted that there are not enough funds to cover the main outflows: import payments, debt repayment, and capital outflows from the country.   ARGENTINA Y SUS CRISIS INTRODUCCIÓN   Todos los argentinos que residimos en el exterior, en mi caso en Perú desde hace ya 50 años, hemos recibido mil veces la pregunta de ¿Cómo puede ser que la Argentina, tan próspera, esté así? Entiendo que personas más preparadas y sabias que yo han intentado dar explicaciones muy doctas sobre este asunto. Intentaré dar mi punto de vista sobre el tema.   EL DEFICIT CRÓNICO DE DIVISAS      El problema se crea cuando se constata que no alcanza para cubrir los principales rubros de salida, el pago de importaciones, el pago de deuda y la salida de capitales del país.   Los ingresos de divisas en Argentina, desde siempre, dependen fundamentalmente, de la exportación de alimentos. Tanto granos, como carne y sus derivados son, largamente, las principales fuentes de divisas. Hoy día, las exportaciones argentinas llegan, aproximadamente, al 16 % del PBI.
